NBN™ Cabling Relocations and Modifications

All Australian users of computer, telecommunications, alarm and IP-based equipment should be made aware of the fact that it is illegal for anyone other than a Registered Cabler to install or maintain the cabling for this equipment. This mandatory requirement ensures the safety and integrity of our telecommunications network. So it’s important that all cabling professionals be properly accredited and that consumers be aware of need for such credentials. None of us want unskilled ‘cowboys’ tainting the professionalism of our industry and putting the safety of consumers and telecommunications workers at risk.

In-home cabling is strongly recommended as it can allow property owners to choose the location of the nbn™ connection box and may improve connectivity and data speeds within the premises.

When planning an in-home cabling solution, installation will vary depending on the nbn™ access network technology available to the property, and that some safety-critical devices such as medical alarms, fire alarms and lift emergency phones may not be compatible with the nbn™ access network

Only registered cablers can perform in-home cabling work for a home or business owner to connect their property to the nbn™ broadband access network.

First, the NBN connection box (Network Termination Device / NTD) must not under any circumstances be installed in any of the following locations:

  • Bathroom, shower or toilet.
  • Laundry.
  • Sauna, spa or pool area.
  • Kitchen area.
  • Poorly ventilated cupboard.
  • Near heter.
  • Verandah or patio.
  • Ceiling, wall or floor cavity.

NBN™ Relocation –

Is your Network Termination Device (NTD) in the wrong spot?

You have had the NBN connected and the technician has installed your NBN in your bedroom or some other location that’s just ultimately so unpractical?

Moving your NBN™, is it possible?

Yes, moving your NBN is certainly possible. If you’ve had your NBN installed in an awkward location, I would very much so recommend us to come and move it.

As there are a few elements within the NBN setup, you’ll of course need to engage our highly trained licensed technicians who is able to identify the current location, and the new location and make sure all parts of your home wirings are able to be re-run or connected from the new connection point.

NBN box relocation approach:

  1. Identify the current NBN location and note all internally connected cables (through roof cavity).
  2. Identify the new NBN location and feasibility for location.
  3. Identify all the internal wiring connections (phone and data) are able to be fed back to the new NBN location.
  4. Re-run and terminate the copper and fibre connections into the NTD from the outside connection.
  5. Make sure your NBN connection box lights return to normal status
  6. Ensure all services phone, data (internet) and VoIP all return to normal function.

How much does it cost to relocate your NBN™?

The cost for relocating your NTD can vary depending on the size of your house and current location of the NTD. Generally, though most NTD’s are installed within a garage or at the building entry point where your conduit comes in from the street.

Although the cost may vary, I’ll probably suggest that an average cost to relocate your existing NBN inside your house will be between $210-$590 depending on a few factors.

Are there any alternatives to moving the NBN™?

Yes, Depending on the exact reason why you want to move your NBN, there could be alternate ways to resolve your problem. I’d say there are two main reasons why users may want to relocate their box.

  1. The location of the box is impracticable or subject to overheating i.e in a garage, kitchen or bedroom.
  2. You want to get the most speed out of your NBN connection and want it as close to your computer as possible.

Should you have selected number one, well then you’ll definitely be in the ball park for around $210-$590 for a full NBN connection relocation.

However, if you selected number two, there is no need to actually move your NTD box. Generally, we would recommend installing a CAT6 data cable between your NTD and your desired modem or phone location. We generally recommend installing your Providers Modem near your TV and then distributing your internal cables from that central point out to your wireless access points and other peripherals around your home.
